While I like to redeem miles and points for first and business class on long international flights, Southwest is by far my preferred airline for domestic flights.  However, Southwest offers international flights to many popular travel destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean so it is also a great option for shorter international flights to warm weather destinations.  Southwest’s international flight network is even more motivation to earn the Southwest companion pass.

Where Does Southwest Fly Internationally?

Southwest has temporarily suspended service to some of their international destinations. Following is the list of all Southwest international flight destinations:

  • Aruba (AUA)  – flights suspended and will not resume before November 1
  • Belize City, Belize (BZE) – flights suspended and expected to resume in future
  • Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, Mexico (SJD)
  • Cancun, Mexico (CUN)
  • Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico (CZM) – flights suspended and expected to resume in future
  • Grand Cayman (GCM) – flights suspended and expected to resume in future
  • Havana, Cuba (HAV) – flights suspended but expected to resume on August 1
  • Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) – flights suspended and will not resume before November 1
  • Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ) – approved pre-travel authorization form required prior to boarding and/or entering Jamaica (click here for more information)
  • Nassau, Bahamas (NAS) – negative COVID-19 Rapid Test/PCR (swab) is required and must be presented upon arrival. Click here for more information.
  • Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (PLS) – flights suspended and expected to resume in future
  • Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (PVR) – flights suspended but will resume on October 8, 2020
  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ) – flights suspended and will not resume before November 1.
  • San José, Costa Rica (SJO) – flights suspended and will not resume before November 1
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)

Note: Even though Puerto Rico is a US territory and is considered a domestic flight from the US, it has been included in the list because some Americans think it is an international flight.

Check this link on southwest.com for the most up to date information. Southwest is now accepting reservations through January 4, 2021 so you can book flights for later this year for some destinations that have yet to resume service.

If you will be flying Southwest in the next couple of months, please note that masks are required and Southwest has changed their boarding process to encourage physical distancing.

I have visited a few of these places (Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Grand Cayman, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta) before flying Southwest was an option (Southwest first started offering international flights in 2014 and has been rapidly adding destinations since then). In the future, I would most likely fly Southwest if I were to return to these places or travel to another Caribbean destination on their route map.
