Soon it will be easier for most people to travel to India.   Presently, in order to visit India, travellers from most countries need to apply for a traditional visa in advance.

In a decision by the government of India, which is anticipated to be implemented by October of this year, India will eliminate the requirement for a traditional visa and move to an electronic travel authorization (ETA) scheme.  ETA will allow foreign visitors to apply and pay for a visa-on-arrival online. The visa would be available for a 30-day period from the date of arrival in India.

India currently offers visa on arrival for visitors of only 11 countries, including Finland, the Philippines, Singapore and Japan.  Once this new visa process is implemented later this year, visa on arrival will be available to visitors from almost every country (except 8 countries including Afghanistan, China, Iran, Iraq,  Sri Lanka, Pakistan) who will still have to go through the traditional visa process.

The new visa on arrival program will initially be available at 9 Indian airports (including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Goa and Trivandrum) by the end of this year and will eventually be extended to a total of 26 international airports.
