Below is a list of sunflower fields near Chicago – listed in order of distance from downtown Chicago. They are all in the Chicago area (in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana) and are located between 40 minutes to 2 hours driving time from downtown.

I have included useful information you need to plan your visit, including addresses, hours, bloom dates as well as links to their websites and facebook pages. Note: Sunflower fields sometimes close after bad weather and dates are adjusted so always make sure to check their facebook pages for the most up to date hours, dates and weather related closures before you go.

Johnsons Farm

Distance from Chicago: About 41 miles southwest of Chicago (about a 50 minute drive)

Dates: Sunflower Fun Farm Weekend will be held on September 7-8, 14-15 and 21-22, 2024 (weather dependent).

Hours: 8am – 6pm (last admission is 5pm)

Cost: Fun Farm admission is $15 per person for all farm activities (except the train and produce cannons) OR $25 for an all access pass per person for all farm activities.

Dates: Sunflower fields were open from mid-July until end of August in 2024.

Hours: Fridays from 10:30-5:30 (last ticket sold at 4:30); Saturday-Sunday from 9:30-4:30 (last ticket sold at 3:30).

Cost: Online tickets are $16.99+fees. Walk-ups are welcome but quantities at the ticket booth may be limited, and are subject to a higher ticket price of $19.99. Children ages 4 and under are free, no ticket needed. They offer a discount of $2 to seniors (65+) and to military personnel who present appropriate and valid identification – but only for walk-up customers. Keller’s Farmstand has a 3-acre pick-your-own sunflower field with 3 acres of sunflowers and over 60,000 blooms. There are photos opportunities in the field. The farm has a children’s play area. Pets are NOT allowed.

Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch

Distance from Chicago: About 50 miles northwest from Chicago (1 hour driving time)

Hours: 10am-6pm daily

Cost: $5 per person. Tickets only available at the maze entrance.

Heap’s Pumpkin Farm

Kuipers Family Farm

Dates: Open August 24-September 14, 2024.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 9AM-6PM and Sunday 10AM-6PM (Last admission to the field is 5:00 PM M-F and 5:30PM weekends)

Cost: $14.99 admission Per Person which includes 1 Bloom; $2.00 per extra bloom. Children 2 and under admitted free. They also offer combination tickets for those that want to go apple picking. Admission available on-site only (no online tickets).

Kuipers Family Farm will have over 7 acres of 20+ different sunflower varieties in the fieldss. The experience goes ‘full bloom’ on weekends with live music and delicious farm-fresh food options on the scenic orchard lawn. More information will be posted soon.

Woody’s Orchard

Distance from Chicago: Approximately 58 miles west of Chicago (1 hr 15 minutes driving time)

Dates: Open August 31 – October 27, 2024

Hours: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm on Thursdays-Sundays in September.

In addition to sunflowers, Woody’s Orchard has an apple orchard and a U Pick pumpkin patch. There are tons of fun activities for kids including train rides and a Play Yard with a spider web, jump pad, hay maze, big slides, hamster rollers, duck racers, wooden tractors, climbing tire pile and a cedar playhouse.

Stade’s Farm and Market

Distance from Chicago: Approximately 60 miles north of Chicago (1 h 15 minutes driving time)

Dates: Sunflower picking on the farm will begin around the beginning of July and will last through late September.

Hours: 9 am – 5 pm.

Cost: Price for cut your own sunflower flowers is $2 each or $5 for 3 flowers or fill a vase full for $25. (Zinnias may be picked for vases at the same price). They accept all forms of payment except American Express.

Stade’s Farm and Market has planted 2+ acres and 18 different varieties of sunflowers. They also grow other cut flowers such as snapdragons, zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, and amaranthus. Flower clippers are provided if needed. Sunflowers are available for picking right now!

Distance: 60 miles north of Chicago (1 hour driving time)

Dates: They expect to have a long sunflower season – from late July-October 2024.

Hours: Open 10:00am-7:00pm every day (weather permitting)

Thompson Strawberry Farm opened up a sunflower patch in 2020 for the first time and planted more than 2 million sunflowers but this year they will have over 4 million sunflowers on 30 acres. They have paths that are cut out of the field for you to walk around. They have also doubled their zinnias and wildflowers. ​Don’t forget to bring something to cut the flowers with as well as a vase or bag to put them in (water will be provided for your flowers).

Richardson Adventure Farm

Address: 909 English Prairie Rd, Spring Grove, IL 60081

Distance from Chicago: 65 miles northwest of downtown Chicago

Dates: The sunflower fields will open for the season on September 7, 2024. They expect to remain open depending on weather.

Hours: Closed on Monday through Wednesday. Open Thursday 3pm-dusk, Friday-Saturday 10an – dusk, and Sunday 12pm– dusk.

Richardson Adventure Farm has 13 acres of sunflowers planted in a whimsical design with 3.2 miles of flowing trail to stroll through. They have many different varieties of sunflowers of many different colors including orange, yellow, gold, red, and peach. Friendly dogs on a leash are welcome.

Jonamac Orchard offers U-pick flower experience and fields bursting with Sunflowers, Zinnias and Cosmos. Their zinnia patch will bloom later in September, coinciding with the opening of their Pumpkin Patch. The farm also offers apple picking, U-Pick pumpkin patch (opens September 21, 2024) and a corn maze. Dates: They have various sunflower fields so they have a long sunflower season. They have a sunflower field currently in bloom and expected to remain open through September 8, 2024.

Von Bergen’s Country Market is hosting its Annual Sunflower Festival with over 30 acres of sunflowers. Pets are not allowed on the farm except for trained ADA service animals. Reservations are suggested to ensure entry, since this place is very popular and gets crowded especially on weekends.

Matthiessen State Park

Cost: FREE (picking flowers is not allowed)

Hours: 7 am– 8:30 pm daily

Dates: Sunflowers are usually in peak bloom around mid-July to late July.

Matthiessen State Park is an Illinois state park with beautiful rock formations located a few miles south of the more famous and popular Starved Rock State Park. This underrated park has a 60-acre sunflower field (in the southern part of the park behind the model airplane field).

Skelly’s Farm Market

Address: 2713 South Hayner Road, Janesville, WI 53548

Distance from Chicago: About 108 miles northwest of Chicago (1 hr 45 min drive)

Dates: Their sunflower field is expected to be open late July – early August in 2024 and they are only in bloom for a couple weeks.

​​Hours: Daily 9am – 8:30pm, last entry at 7:30pm.

Cost: Every guest age 4 and older must pay admission (3 and under are free). There are three admission levels with at least one flower included in your admission price. The lowest price admission level is the Single Flower Experience: $9/child ages 4-12 or $12/adult ages 13+ includes admission to the field, 1 cut sunflower to take home, a choice of donut from their bakery, and 10% off sunflower gifts in their retail barn. They also have the option to buy additional flowers to take home for $2/each or $6/6 flowers.

Skelly’s Farm Market has planted approximately 5 acres of beautiful yellow sunflowers for you to walk through and enjoy. They have 3 special areas in the sunflower field: the walking area, the cutting area, and the specialty flower area. Their walking area is around 4 acres and features “prop stops,” 2 viewing platforms and opportunities for photos! These prop stops are little areas cut out off the main path and include items you can use for picture props and backgrounds (examples: straw bales, ladders, rustic fences). The cutting area is used only for picking out sunflowers for cutting to take home with you! Lastly, the specialty flower area is around a quarter acre of more than 20 different varieties of sunflowers and is located right at the entrance of the walking field. Enjoy multi-colored flowers, branching flowers, short and tall flowers and flowers with large and small heads. This area is not used for cutting. Professional photography is allowed in their field during business hours.

Lannon Sunflower Farm

Dates: Opened on July 12, 2024.

Hours: 8 am. to 7 pm. daily.

Cost: Admission is $20 per vehicle which includes 12 U-Pick Sunflowers (while supplies last). There is an additional charge for corn maze and pumpkins. They are not setup to accept electronic payments.

Lannon Sunflower Farm has 8 acres of sunflowers. They have a wild flower area just for viewing and taking pictures (no picking here – flowers reserved for pollinators). Well mannered dogs on a leash are welcome. Be sure to bring own clippers or scissors (they have a few extras if you forget) to cut your flowers and a vase, bucket, bag or container to bring them home in. They will also have a kids corn maze and wildflower gardens.
